Speeding car driven by policeman kills two children in Haryana

A tragic accident in Haryana’s Palwal district claimed the lives of two children and left another injured when a speeding car driven by a police constable hit them on Monday afternoon. The children, aged 9, 13, and 7, were walking home from their school in Uttawar village when the incident took place.

Police identified the driver as head constable Narender, who is posted in Mewat. According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mohinder Verma, the constable was driving a car with a temporary registration number when it struck the three children. Sadly, two of them died on the spot, while the third child was critically injured and rushed to PGI Hospital in Rohtak for treatment.

DSP Verma said the accused has been arrested and a case registered against him. A medical examination is also being carried out to determine whether he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.

Police take action against the accused

The accident occurred near Utawad village around 1:30 pm on Monday. Witnesses said the car was speeding when it ploughed into the children, leaving little chance for them to escape. The sudden and violent impact shocked the local community, which gathered at the spot soon after the crash.

Police moved quickly to arrest head constable Narender. His car has been seized, and an investigation has begun. “We have arrested the accused, registered a case, and sent him for a medical examination. This will show if he was drunk at the time of driving,” DSP Verma confirmed.

The bodies of the two deceased children were sent for post-mortem, which has already been completed. Their families have been devastated by the loss. The third child, aged 7, continues to fight for his life in hospital.

Police also expressed condolences to the families of the deceased. The district administration has been directed to provide full support and assistance to the victims’ families. Officials said that financial and emotional support will be extended, and necessary help will be provided for the treatment of the injured child.

This incident has raised questions about the reckless behaviour of some policemen who are expected to uphold law and safety but sometimes act irresponsibly. Residents of the area have demanded strict action to ensure such tragedies do not happen again.

Wider concern over road safety

The accident in Palwal is not an isolated case. It comes just a day after another high-profile accident in Delhi, where a BMW car fatally struck a motorcyclist near Dhaula Kuan. In that case, the driver, identified as 38-year-old Gaganpreet Kaur from Gurugram, was arrested by Delhi Police during their investigation.

Police teams visited the residence of the deceased motorcyclist, Navjot Singh, to meet his family and record statements from eyewitnesses. One eyewitness, Gulfam, who took Navjot to the hospital, shared his account with investigators. The case has once again drawn attention to the increasing number of accidents caused by speeding and careless driving in cities and towns across India.

In Haryana’s Palwal, the tragedy has sparked anger among locals. Many residents said they were disturbed that a policeman, who should act responsibly, was instead driving recklessly and causing loss of innocent lives. Parents in Uttawar expressed fear about sending their children to school on foot, worrying that such accidents could happen again.

Road safety has become a pressing concern in India, especially with frequent reports of overspeeding, drunk driving, and accidents involving government officials or people in positions of authority. Experts say stricter enforcement of road laws, better training for drivers, and improved traffic management are urgently needed.

Authorities in Haryana have promised a fair investigation into the Palwal accident. DSP Verma assured the public that no leniency would be shown to the accused despite his position in the police department. “The law is equal for all, and action will be taken as per procedure,” he said.

A call for accountability

As the families of the deceased children mourn their loss, public pressure is building on police and government authorities to ensure accountability. For many, the fact that the driver was a policeman makes the tragedy harder to accept. It raises questions about discipline and conduct within the police force.

The injured 7-year-old remains in critical condition, and doctors at PGI Hospital in Rohtak are doing their best to save his life. Meanwhile, the families of the deceased are preparing for funerals. Neighbours and relatives have come forward to offer support, but the grief in the community is deep.

The district administration’s assurance of support may provide some relief, but many locals say real justice will only be done if the policeman faces strict punishment. Some community leaders have also called for safety measures near schools, such as speed breakers and stricter traffic monitoring, to prevent such accidents in the future.

This heartbreaking incident is a reminder of the urgent need for stronger road safety rules, responsible driving, and accountability for those in positions of authority. For now, two young lives have been cut short, and one more hangs in the balance — a painful cost of negligence on the road.
